What is TickIT?
TickIT is a scheme used by the Certification Bodies to focus more heavily on processes related to software design and development where these are carried out in organisations aiming for ISO 9001 certification.
The reason for this additional emphasis is due to the relatively high potential for errors (bugs) in developed software, not just in terms of developer or testing errors, but also due to the very common problem of software outcomes or products not entirely reflecting the original requirements due to poor quality specifications.
A TickIT Guide can be purchased that provides developers and managers with practical guidelines on software development lifecycle models as well as examples of best practice.
How does TickIT work?
The Assessment and follow up
Assessment under TickIT is similar to basic ISO 9001 in that it is a two stage approach where an initial pre-assessment is followed up by a full in-depth audit. Surveillance visits are also more frequent depending on the size and complexity of the organisation.
Do you have to follow the TickIT Guide?
The TickIT guide is not mandatory. It simply offers guidance based on industry best practice, so an organisation may very well develop its own software development lifecycle and controls, so long as they are effective.
